Ομαδικά μαθήματα Αwareness Through Movement (ATM) ®

What is the Feldenkrais Method
About the Feldenkrais® Method
Somatic/Movement Education, Rehabilitation, Neuroplasticity
The Feldenkrais Method that was inspired and developed by Dr.Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984), an engineer, athlete, martial arts teacher and human development researcher, is a type of movement/somatic educational system that focuses on movement as a form of re-educating the nervous system and improving function and ability. The Method is part of the wider family of somatic approaches (Alexander technique, Rolfing, Bones for Life, BodyMind Centering etc.) It is based in the self-observation, self-experiential learning and knowledge and in the developmental elements of movement. There is a special approach to learning through movement, where the student is not called upon imitation of the teacher’s action, but is guided through speech and/or touch to educate himself on his abilities, limitations and potential evolution.
The Method is enabling the balance between the nervous system and the muscular-skeletal organization, focusing on the improvement of their “collaboration” and interrelationship and the improvement of the quality and the awareness of movement in close relation to posture while moving or being still. Therefore the ultimate result is an improvement of daily routines and quality of life and performance of simple or highly complex actions. The Method’s goal is to create humans with an established self regulation, self esteem, moving and living easily, ergonomically and resiliently by creating a flexible mind rather than just a flexible body, through the notion of thinking-sensing-feeling and moving as being a whole connected mechanism.
Moshe Feldenkrais’s basic moto is : “Movement is life. Life is a process. Improve the quality of the process and you improve the quality of life itself.”
Who is it for
The Feldenkrais Method is addressed to all ages and abilities. And the teaching manner/practice is adjusted to the needs/abilities of the student(s), both in group and in individual sessions.
The Method is especially useful for people suffering muscular-skeletal discomforts/problems (arthritis, rheumatic pain, chronic pain, scoliosis etc.) post traumatic stress, injuries, neurological conditions, for rehabilitation after injuries, developmental delays, learning disabilities, stress/depression/trauma and many more conditions concerning that involve the body as a connected aspect to the whole self.
It is a very light type of movement modality very useful for anyone who is seeking a gentle way to move and exercise and cannot easily follow other modalities. It is a learning process not therapy by itself, it endures and evolves the nervous system and give any person a better sense of awareness and wholeness, an enhancement of their self image.
What the Feldenkrais® Method offers
The Feldenkrais® Method is applied in two separate but complimentary ways :
1. Group Lessons > Awareness Through Movement® (ΑΤΜ) – Sessions guided through speech (no demonstration)
2. Individual Lessons > Functional Integration® (FI) – Hands on approach with less speech
Group Lessons Αwareness Through Movement (ATM) ®
Group lessons consist of very structured movement directions, where the tacher/practitioner is giving only by speech. Th student is following, explores movement, observes himself through the process and deals with his/her own movement patterns and organization. There are no corrections happening, no touch (unless it is of vital reasons). In the ATM lessons, self-awareness in encouraged, ease and comfort are what we are looking for and an improvement of proprioception (kinesthetic awareness in space and within the body). The pace is slow, repetitive and playful, with frequent stops and rests. The aim is a minimization of effort and maximization of efficiency. The muscular tone is regulated and the persons re-organizes their movement neurologically. The result is a sense of lightness, ease, better skeletal alignment, more range in movement, elimination of effort and improvement in the breathing capacity. Pain is reduced or disappears, useless effort and a better sense of the whole self arises. As an ultimate goal the person can live and function better in their whole life not just in their movement.
Individual Lessons - Functional Integration (FI) ®
The Functional Integration approach happens in individual context, where the practitioner practices very light movements on the student’s body. These movements are like stimulations through light touch, small manipulations and lifts, sometimes micromovements, other times bigger moves, but never intrusive and invasive in any way towards the person. There is always consent about any movement performed and the student is encouraged to acknowledge whether what is being done is within their comfort zone and in a pain and discomfort free manner. The nervous system receives information on how a person moves and acts and is encouraged to pay attention to what he does/feels. Gradually new patterns of movement are introduced and the movement range and ease change. In this slow and playful manner, the student is exploring new more efficient ways of moving and being. There are no pulls, pushes and rearrangements of the body, no fixing and no correcting. The person learns through the hands of the practitioner what are their limitations and potential for improvement, what is more ergonomic and functional for their own personal needs.
